Penalties Issued by RBI: ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Under Scrutiny

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Tuesday that it has taken punitive action against ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank, imposing fines of Rs 12.19 crore and Rs 3.95 crore respectively. These penalties have been levied due to the banks’ failure to comply with specific regulatory guidelines.

ICICI Bank, a prominent private sector lender, faces penalties for its breach of regulations pertaining to ‘Loans and Advances-Statutory and Other restrictions’ as well as ‘Frauds classification and reporting by commercial banks and select Financial Institutions (Fls)’.

Meanwhile, Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited is being penalized for non-compliance with directives concerning ‘Managing Risks and Code of Conduct in Outsourcing of Financial Services by banks’ and ‘Recovery Agents engaged by banks’.

The Char Dham pilgrimage sites, nestled in the lofty Garhwal Himalayan expanse of Uttarakhand, have welcomed an unprecedented surge of over 50 lakh pilgrims, marking a historic milestone.

Law enforcement officials report an extraordinary influx of devotees, hailing from both corners of the nation and abroad, eager to partake in the spiritual sanctity of the world-renowned Char Dhams – Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. Since the initiation of the Yatra in April and May, Kedarnath Dham has witnessed the arrival of 17.08 lakh pilgrims, Badrinath Dham with 15.90 lakh, Gangotri with 8.46 lakh, and Yamunotri with 6.94 lakh devotees.

Additionally, over 1.77 lakh devotees undertook the spiritual odyssey to Hemkund Sahib, whose portals reverently closed for winter on October 11. In the preceding year, the Char Dham sites welcomed 47 lakh devotees.

Forex traders noted that the rupee exhibited a positive bias, buoyed by the encouraging trends in the domestic markets. However, the strength of the US dollar and concerns surrounding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East limited significant gains.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee commenced trading at 83.24 against the US dollar and fluctuated within the range of 83.22 to 83.26 throughout the day. Ultimately, the rupee concluded 3 paise higher at 83.24 (provisional) compared to the previous close.

Anuj Choudhary, a Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, anticipates that the rupee may continue to trade with a slight positive bias due to the growing risk appetite in global markets and a decrease in crude oil prices. Additionally, diplomatic efforts aimed at mitigating the Middle East conflict might lend further support to risk assets. However, the persistent strength of the US dollar and any escalation in geopolitical tensions between Hamas and Israel could potentially restrain sharp gains. It’s worth noting that selling pressure from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and the RBI’s maturity of dollar/rupee swap transactions may exert pressure on the rupee at higher levels.
